Fresh, slightly sweet, and slightly sour cherries can be a delicious snack. What do we need to know when it comes to the health benefits of cherries?
Beyond being delicious, cherries are rich in important vitamins and minerals. One cup of pitted cherries contains around 95 calories, 333 mg potassium, 10.5 mg vitamin C, and 16.5 mg magnesium. These nutrients are essential for many bodily processes including nerve function, muscle contraction, and bone, immune system, and skin health. One cup of cherries also contains 3 grams of fiber, which helps promote a healthy digestive system.
In addition to vitamins and minerals, cherries are a rich source of antioxidants or disease-fighting compounds. Typically, the darker the fruit or vegetable, the higher the antioxidant content. Cherries come in a variety of colors, from yellow to bright red to deep dark red. The dark red color of cherries is due to a flavonoid pigment known as anthocyanin. This anti-inflammatory compound may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and cancer. Cherries are also a good source of carotenoids, another antioxidant, as well as tryptophan, serotonin, and melatonin.
While cherries can make a wonderful snack, eating too much at once may cause a spike in blood sugar. This spike can be followed by a crash, resulting in depleted energy and cravings.
This can be mitigated by eating cherries with fat and protein, such as by snacking on them with a handful of almonds.
