The Relationship Between Gut Health and Wellbeing

Hippocrates was right when he said all disease begins in the gut. The gastrointestinal system, or the gut, is the foundation for almost all systems in the body. The gut contains trillions of bacteria that play a role in digestive, immune, metabolic, and even mental health.

Around 70% of the immune system is in the gut. The gut is also where many hormones are made and recycled. Around 90% of serotonin, a hormone that helps mediate feelings of well-being, is made in the gut. The gut also plays a role in absorption of thyroid hormone which controls our metabolic rate.

As the host for these bacteria, we need to be cognizant of their impact on our health. If we treat these bacteria well by supporting our gut health, they will treat us well in return and we will live a balanced and vital life.
