You’re pregnant and so excited. Until that pesky nausea hits and you already can’t wait for the pregnancy to be over.
Nearly 80% of women suffer from pregnancy nausea so just this should serve as a source of comfort. But let’s be real, just because it’s normal and common, doesn’t mean you should deal with the worst of it.
When I was in my first trimester, my doctor and friends said carbs will become my best friend. Crackers, breads, and fruit. So, that’s what I leaned on.
I would feel super ehhh, reach for some bread and orange juice, feel better for 30 minutes and then start feeling worse. Like a lot worse.
And the more I ate these high carb foods, the more I craved them. It was a vicous cycle that robbed me of my energy and made me increasingly nauseous.
I realized that the exact foods that are supposed to “help” nausea are the ones that also perpetuate the cycle.
I decided to start adding protein and fat to each meal and snack. This principle of blood sugar balance was something I had practiced as part of my normal life, but for some reason had gone completely out of the window during pregnancy.
At first, adding more protein (think eggs, nuts, collagen, meat, lentils, beans) definitely didn’t sound good, but the results were AMAZING.
So instead of waking up in the morning and having an apple with some crackers, I had half an apple, 2 hardboiled eggs, and some walnuts.
This simple change in the morning literally transformed my day. Nausea gone. Fatigue gone. Brain back.
Or when I wanted to snack on frozen mangoes, I would make sure to have some walnuts before. So simple but so powerful.
Focusing on fiber, protein, fat or at least adding them to your meals helps prevent a blood sugar rollercoaster – that’s known to cause nausea and fatigue.
So why are we encouraged to perpetuate this miserable cycle?
If you want to feel better, start by switching up your breakfast. Get at least 20-30 grams of protein in, with some fiber and fat and see how your day transforms.
Some examples are 2/3 eggs with some avocado and toast, or a chia pudding bowl with berries, or a Key3 smoothie (head to our recipe section for ideas).
Can’t keep anything down for breakfast?? Lucky for you I have a delicious alternative that saved me as well on rough mornings: The Key3 Coffee

How to make it?
Organic Coffee or Tea (regular or decaf)
2 scoops collagen
1 scoop acacia fiber
½ cup goat milk or other full fat milk
Blend with a hand frother and enjoy : )
This is a delicious way to start that day that gives your metabolism all the building blocks for blood sugar balance and to keep the nausea at bay. It helps your body get in some essential nutrients without having to chew on food and will help get you on track for a better feeling day – and fuel your baby of course!
Most importantly, know that the nausea will go away and that your body is doing some incredible things today.
XOXO
