You might have heard about electrolytes, but what exactly are electrolytes, and why are they important?
Electrolytes are essential minerals that are important for various functions in the body. Electrolytes help regulate the amount of water in the body, balance the body’s pH levels, move nutrients into and waste out of cells, and are essential for the proper functioning of nerves, muscles, and the heart.
While electrolytes can be found in many different foods, some of the best sources for electrolytes post-exercise include sports drinks, tablets such as Nuun, or powders like Skratch, LMNT, or Liquid IV. These products are made with athletes in mind and so contain ideal amounts of the electrolytes lost in sweat. Water, sports drinks, and coconut water can also be combined with salty foods such as soup or broth, pickles, or pretzels.
Replacing the electrolytes lost in sweat becomes increasingly important in the warmer months. When the amount of water in the body changes, such as when we sweat during exercise, the levels of electrolytes drop. This can result in side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, muscle spasms, nausea, and muscle weakness. The main electrolytes found in sweat are sodium, chloride, potassium, as well as small amounts of magnesium and calcium. Consuming sodium in particular will help stimulate thirst and will also help the body retain fluids.
For those planning summer hikes, summer runs, or other outdoor activities in the near future, be sure to replace not only fluids but also electrolytes to enhance recovery and feel your best!
