How to Prep your Metabolism to get Pregnant and Stay Pregnant

The thought of getting pregnant is exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Is my body ready for this? Can I even get pregnant? How long will this take?

The best news is that prepping your body ahead of time can make the process of getting pregnant AND staying pregnant a whole lot better – easier, quicker, and pleasant.

Your body is meant to carry out this process with success. Millions of women before us have been gracefully doing this for generations. However, modern life stressors (our food environment, stress, movement, etc. ) have taken a big toll on our fertility.

This is especially true for women with hormonal imbalances ( i.e. estrogen dominance, PCOS, hypothyroidism, insulin resistance etc.) but also for perfectly “healthy” women. Many women feel like everything is “right” in the health department until they unsuccessfully try to conceive for a year or two.

Sadly, we’re hearing these stories far too often nowadays, but they don’t have to be our reality.

With the right tools, you can regain control of your fertility and transform it from a dreaded struggle to a natural process that your body does with ease and grace.

When I started to think about pregnancy last year, all of these questions (or more like, fears) popped up in my head. I’ve been taking care of my body but is it really ready to have a baby? Am I eating the right things? Am I supplementing correctly? Even if I got pregnant, would I successfully stay pregnant? Ugh the thought cycles.

I quickly realized that stress and anxiety around pregnancy only make things (much) worse. Ok, deep breaths.

So to answer my questions and calm my fears, I dove into endless pregnancy books. I wanted to catch the things I was doing wrong and fix them before starting to try. Maybe that was the neurotic side of me, but I didn’t want to be “trying” for 6 months if I didn’t HAVE to, as I saw what a toll this took on friends and many women around me.

I expected to explore a whole new world of information through my research, however, I quickly learned that the science behind pregnancy is quite simple.

Maybe not easy, but simple: keep your body feeling safe and nourished.

So, I did just that for 3 months.

(You’re probably wondering what “safe and nourished” even means. Don’t worry, we’ll get to that below.)

Then, in July of this year we started trying. I was expecting at least a few months of “trying”, and was also prepared for it to take 6 months to a year, since that seemed like the expected timeline nowadays.

So end of July rolls around and I’m wining-and-dining (a lot of wining) my way around Paris with a friend from New York. I was feeling a little off but not enough to think I was pregnant. I mean we had only tried once, so what are the chances right? Given the fact there was loads of wine and coffee involved in this trip, I figured, eh it’s probably safer that I check.

I went down to the local pharmacy to grab a pregnancy test, and 10 minutes later, I was staring at the word “enceinte” on the little blue and white stick. I literally had to translate it on google translate.

As you probably guessed, “enceinte” = “pregnant”. Still not sure why the French can’t use the one line-two line system.

I was shocked, relieved, and surprised. One time?? Really? And here I was prepared for this long conception journey.

Was it luck? Nope. Good timing? Nope. Lots of love and nourishment for my body ahead of time. YEP.

I kept my body feeling “safe and nourished”.

So now what does that mean? Biologically, our bodies don’t want to reproduce during times of stress or lack of nutrients. So you want your body to receive signals of safety and nourishment, and create the ideal environment for conception and growth. The main road-block to this is inflammation. To decrease inflammation we want to decrease stress hormones, balance blood sugar, and optimize gut health.

And that’s why I want to share with you what I called the Key3 for Fertility.

It’s a stress free way to not only nourish your body into fertility, but keep it strong and balanced for pregnancy and beyond.

What are the Key3?

Key3 = gut health, glucose, hormones.

By focusing on the Key3, you keep your metabolism at optimal function and send signals to your body that this is a good time to grow a baby.

(If you want to learn about the role of each system in fertility head over to our blog here!)

What are some things you can do TODAY to optimize the Key3 and prep your body for conception?

  1. Let’s start with gut health. Eat more fiber. A large diversity of fibers! Research shows that eating 30 different fibers a week is the magic number for optimal gut health.

  1. What about glucose? Focus on more protein. About 20 grams per meal. This will help balance your blood sugar and prevent you from mindlessly snacking throughout the day.

  1. And last but not least, your hormones. Switch from high intensity workouts to more moderate workouts and more consistent movement throughout the day. This will help balance your cortisol levels.

These are just some starting points to get you inspired and into action with prepping your body, but there is so much more you can learn and do to optimize these systems!

If you focus on the Key3, pregnancy becomes a natural and easy process.

You deserve to get pregnant without struggle and feel good in the process. It shouldn’t be such a “miracle”. I mean, of course it’s a miracle, but it shouldn’t be such a “hard to attain” miracle.
