Why Do I Crave Salt?

Are you team salty or team sweet? Many people say that they crave salty foods, and wonder whether this means they are lacking in this important mineral. While this is possible, there may be other reasons you keep reaching for the salt shaker.

What are food cravings?

Cravings for salty foods are common, although the mechanisms behind these cravings are not completely understood. Salt is a necessary mineral, so it is possible our bodies are designed to find it enjoyable.

One potential reason you may be craving salt is that you are dehydrated. Seeking out salty foods will likely make you a bit thirsty, which will encourage you to drink. The salt also helps the body hold onto fluids.

Constant salt cravings can occasionally point to medical issues such as Addison’s disease, which affects the adrenal glands. However, most people crave salt because it enhances the flavors of food, increasing sweetness and blocking bitterness. Many comfort foods are also high in sodium, so we often develop positive associations with these foods.

Too much of a good thing

While too little salt in the diet can be dangerous, too much can also be detrimental. It may therefore be best to seek healthy options to quench your salt cravings. One option can be a handful of dry roasted or raw nuts or seeds. Nuts and seeds contain some protein, healthy fats, as well as important vitamins and minerals.

To boost your protein intake even further while satisfying your salt craving, opt for hard boiled eggs, deviled eggs or egg muffins with some Everything Bagel Seasoning. Another healthy and quick salty snack is a handful of olives, which are high in vitamin E and other antioxidants.

By choosing these healthy options, you will be getting a wide range of nutrients and supporting your gut health while also satisfying your salt cravings.
