Is My Diet Contributing to Brain Fog?

What you eat can have a major impact on your energy levels, fatigue, and ability to concentrate. Your diet, or a lack of certain foods in your diet, can even contribute to brain fog and lack of mental clarity.

Balanced Diet and Deficiencies

It is important to first and foremost consume a balanced diet that consists of protein, healthy fats, and fiber to prevent blood sugar spikes and dips. Blood sugar imbalance can contribute to feelings of fatigue, cravings, and brain fog. It is therefore helpful to aim for protein, fats, and fiber at every meal.

It is also important to consider whether you have a deficiency, as deficiencies in nutrients such as iron or B12 can contribute to fatigue and brain fog.

Foods to Boost Your Mind

While a generally balanced diet is important for proper functioning and focus, certain foods can help energize and support your mind. One such food is salmon, a fish rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fats. One study demonstrated that those with chronic fatigue syndrome can benefit from adding omega-3s to their diet. Other fatty fish rich in omega-3s are herring, sardines, and mackerel.

Another brain-boosting food is avocado, which is rich in monounsaturated fats, magnesium, and potassium. Avocado is also rich in a carotenoid called lutein which can help with cognitive health and the ability to think. Foods high in lutein include dark leafy greens, kale, spinach, squash, eggs, and broccoli.

Turmeric is another food that can support brain health. Curcumin, the bioactive compound in turmeric, has anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin can increase levels of a protein called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, which contributes to healthy brain function. While the curcumin content of turmeric typically consumed is not very high, consuming it with black pepper can substantially increase absorption.

If you’re feeling groggy and like your mind could use a wake-up, consider adding these foods to your diet for a feel-good boost.
